My bike is ready. I changed my oil and oil filter, got a new air filter, new tires and checked my wheel bearings.

A good tip that can save you a lot of trouble: put some fresh grease on your wheel bearings and axle before going on a long trip. If you get a flat tire it will be a lot easier to pull out the axle and remove your wheels.

I think I have all my gear, ready to put in my panniers. I will make a list from everything I’ll take with me later on. It’s important to not only take the right gear for your bike but also for yourself.
For example, take a first aid kit with you containing some basic drugs, antibiotics, needles, disinfectants, … Don’t forget you are in Africa and in most cases there isn’t a hospital after every corner like in our western world. Also get the right vaccinations, for Morocco I got a typhus, hepatitis, tetanus, polio and diphteria vaccination.

Also, take some food with you that is easy to prepare, you never know if you get stranded in the middle of the desert. I got some breakfast rations with me, they can also count as emergency rations, I only have to add some water and it’s ready. I also take some energy bars with me. It’s not much, but it will keep you going for 2 or 3 days.
